Explained GUID Partition Table (GPT)

Over time, storage requirements have increased from a few megabytes (MB) to millions of terabytes (TB). In turn, disk storage sizes have also increased in proportion with storage requirements. With now common hard drives of 1 TB and 3 TB drives soon available, system administrators face problems with the legacy MBR partitioning scheme. Now, it is important to learn how your operating system of Windows Server supports the GPT scheme so you can be fully prepared to move to a new partitioning scheme, GUID (GPT) Partition Table.

Understanding the Limitations of MBR scheme:

The master boot record (MBR) partition Sch θ MA is inherited from the partition used by most operating systems. MBR itself completely located in the first sector on a hard disk (512 bytes). This area the first 440 bytes), MBR is dedicated to the boot loader. BIOS reads the code and execute it, when the computer is started. This code is followed by data space used to store about these four partitions, known as the four primary partition information. Each partition is described in two ways: using cylinder/head/sector (CHS) score and uses logical block addressing (LBA) rating. CHS symbol is obsolete due to its 24-bit limit covers only 8 GB of disk space. 32-bit LBA can handle up to 2 TB. Because we're not increasing LBA MBR; leave no space access to the MBR only the CAP size to 2 TB of disk space.

MBR is another drawback of total data storage space on the computer's hard disk can be divided into four divisions in the majority. If we need to have more than four partitions on the hard disk, and then we need to create a special type called extended partition's partition. These partitions of data integrity problems, because they're in a single data structure, it is easy to damage caused by carelessness or a hardware failure. Extended partitioning data structure without any form of error detection, so damage can be difficult to find.

Another benefit of using GPT disks include overcoming the 4 primary partition MBR disk limit. GPT supports up to 128 primary partitions. GPT data structures is very well defined and stored on disk twice: once at the beginning and again at the end. This will enhance the successful recovery data damage caused by accident or chance of bad sectors. At the same time, cyclic redundancy check (CRC) value calculation of critical data structures, improving the chances of detecting data corruption. The following figure shows the Board layout of the GPT disk, and how that data is stored.

Not provide full support for all Windows operating systems to a GPT disk. Starting from Windows Server 2003 SP1, can be used as data disks but not boot disks with GPT disks. In Windows Server 2008, only x 64 versions of Microsoft operating systems support the GPT disk as the startup disk on EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) boot mode. To the Windows operating system starts, as the startup disk in the BIOS mode does not support GPT disks.
